The Perfect Summer Dress

Last week’s heat wave saw me ditch my usual all-black uniform for a colourful summer dress, courtesy of JD Williams*. I love everything about this dress from the modest length to the light, jersey fabric - it really is my perfect summer dress. With that in mind I wanted to give you a few quick tips for finding your perfect dress this summer.

Experiment With Shapes
There are so many different dress shapes that you’re bound to find the one that’s right for you. If you’re on the larger side like me, a skater dress is ideal for cinching you in, in all the right places (they help me to feel dainty when quite frankly, I’m not). If you’re more petite why not try a T Shirt dress? Or, if you’re fortunate to have legs longer than your arms (#shortgirlproblems) a maxi dress could be a real winner - just experiment and find the one that flatters you most.

Wear All the Colours
Summer means one thing - all the colour. Now is the time to be adventurous with brighter palettes and louder prints. My personal theme this year is “candy pop”, a mix of pastels, brights and “neon pastels”. If you prefer more organic colours, look to bohemian fashion and festival clothing for inspiration.

Stick to Light Fabrics
On the five days of hot weather we get in the UK, it’s nice to keep cool. Opt for thin, chiffon fabrics and looser fits to give your skin room to breathe and to avoid being a sweaty mess. I recommend a jersey fabric, like the one I’m wearing, as it’s thin enough to keep you cool in the day but thick enough to keep you warm during those su-huh-mmer niiii-iiiights.

Accessorize
Now that you have your dress it’s time to accessorize and if there’s one thing I do love, it’s a good accessory. Shoes, jackets, flower crowns, sunnies, brimmed hats, sandals, cute bags and jewellery - you name it, I love it. It doesn’t need to be too crazy but accessories can really bring an outfit together.  I’ve gone for a simple denim jacket and a pair of lilac, slip on shoes (because when there’s an opportunity to wear lilac, I take it).

Wear It!
You’ve got your outfit sorted and now it’s time to show it off. Make lots of lovely plans this summer; meet up with your friends, go on a road trip, have a bbq on the beach - whatever you do just have an amazing time.
